And make no mistake, that’s what the safety pins are for. ![]() Marginalized people know full well the long history of white people calling themselves allies while doing nothing to help. We don’t get to make ourselves feel better by putting on safety pins and self-designating ourselves as allies. ![]() Last week, Joe Corré - son of punk originators Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McClaren - publicly torched his archive of punk memorabilia in a symbolic critique of the fashion system and consumer culture. The answer puts forth a taxonomy of political responsibility and agency. There are few things less classically punk than attending the premiere of a rom-com starring Hugh Grant, but the dress transmitted an air of insouciant countercultural mischief. Take, for example, the infamous Versace dress Elizabeth Hurley wore in 1994: a clingy black gown slashed open along the torso and held together with oversized, golden safety pins. As a result, the safety pin has come to symbolize punk’s scrappy, DIY ethos, even when it appears outside of a punk context. A social media debate quickly ensured about what this might mean, some asserting that the safety pin meant that an immigrant could view one as a safe White person, some ridiculing the exercise as a feel-good effort by Whites to distance themselves from the White nationalist vote, some interpreting its meaning as I don’t agree. White people were 70 of the voters in the 2016 election, and we’re the only demographic Trump won.
